Introduction
All the tools you will need in this guide can be found in the iFixit Pro Toolkit. We suggest you perform this replacement on a large, level workspace where you can avoid knocking small parts onto the floor. Label any small parts so you know where to put them when reassembling the laptop.

What you need
Step 1
Motherboard
- Begin by placing the laptop face down on a flat surface.
- The battery is located in the bottom left hand corner of the device.
- Slide the lock switch on the battery to the unlocked position.
- Slide the release lever on the battery towards the lock switch. The battery should now rotate out of its dock in the laptop.

Step 2
- Remove the casing located next to the battery.
- Using a #0 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two 4 mm screws.
- Use the precision tweezers to disconnect the white and black wire from the device.
- Remove the thin black wire from the device.

Step 3
- Open the remaining casings using a #0 Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove all visible screws on the bottom of the laptop to complete this step.

Step 4
- Hold the back cover slightly open.
- Use the precision tweezers to disconnect the two ribbon cables at the bottom of the laptop.
- Open the small black clips to free the ribbon cables.
- Remove the back cover.

Step 5
- Locate the white plug in the upper right hand corner of the laptop.
- Use the iFixit opening tools to apply even, backwards pressure to each side of the plug until the plug is free from the motherboard.

Step 6
- Locate the ribbon cable on the bottom of the laptop.
- Open the small black clip that is holding the ribbon cable.
- Gently remove the ribbon cable with the precision tweezers.

Step 7
- Locate the white plug next to the ribbon cable that was removed in the previous step.
- Gently unplug the plug with your hand or the blue iFixit opening tools.

- Remove the motherboard from the laptop casing.

Cooling Fan
- Use the precision tweezers to remove the metal cover off the top of the cooling fan. It should “pop” off with little effort.
- Flip over the motherboard.
- The cooling fan is now located in the upper left-hand corner of the motherboard.

Step 10
- Remove the two 5 mm screws located at the bottom right of the cooling fan.
- The cooling fan housing is now free from the motherboard.

Step 11
- Locate the white plug connecting the cooling fan to the motherboard.
- Gently pull on the plug to disconnect the cooling fan from the motherboard.
- Remove the cooling fan from the motherboard.

Remove the cooling fan from the motherboard.
To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
