Despite pressing on keys, input from keyboard is not reflected by changes taking place on the screen.
Check for physical obstructions within keyboard. Hold the laptop upside down and shake gently. Sometimes debris will dislodge and fall out. One can also try using a keyboard vacuum or a can of compressed air to dislodge debris, then repeat the process of holding the laptop upside down and shaking gently.
Check to see if one or more keys are stuck in position and are unable to move. Try cleaning each individual key switch with a small amount of cleaner such as isopropyl alcohol or warm soapy water. Use liquids sparingly around electronic devices. A cotton swab can be very helpful for this process.
Check to see if num lock, caps lock, and scroll lock options can be turned on and off by pressing on the respective labeled keys. When these keys are pressed lighted indicators should turn on to indicate the key is enabled, or off to indicate the key is disabled.
Check for a software issue such as an incorrect or outdated driver. Boot the laptop in safe mode and repeat the num lock, caps lock, and scroll lock test outlined above. If the keyboard functions properly in safe mode, try removing or reinstalling any recently added software, then try having Windows automatically update the keyboard driver. Alternatively, try to do a system restore in Windows to a previous restore point at a time when the keyboard did function properly.
If the above steps have not resolved the issue, the keyboard can be replaced by following this guide.
Movements made on touchpad do not reflect in movement of pointer on screen.
Try holding down Fn key and F5 key together for several seconds, as this is the key-combination to toggle the touchpad on and off on this model laptop.
Check in Windows device manager under ‘hardware’ and then ‘mouse’ or ‘mice and other pointing devices’ to see if Windows indicates a problem with the touchpad. If so, it may be possible for windows to automatically repair the problem or automatically update the driver for the touchpad. Be sure to check to see if the option to disable the touchpad while typing is selected, as this will prevent input from touchpad from appearing on screen while keyboard is processing input.
If above steps do not resolve the issue the touchpad can be replaced by following this guide.
Despite Wi-Fi signal being available in the area, laptop will not successfully connect to signal. Ensure other devices are able to successfully connect to the same wifi signal to verify that the problem is not outside of the laptop.
Press F12 key to toggle airplane mode on and off. (This model laptop does not have a separate physical on/off switch for wireless.) If unable to turn Wi-Fi on or off with keyboard input, check wireless settings through Windows software to ensure Wi-Fi is turned on. The wireless indicator light on the front right of the laptop should light white when Wi-Fi is turned on and should not be lit when Wi-Fi is off.
To ensure that your router/modem is providing a signal to your computer try to connect another device, such as a cell phone, to the Wi-Fi. If your device can utilize the Wi-Fi signal, then the router/modem is not the problem. If your device can not utilize the Wi-Fi signal, then the router/modem may be malfunctioning. Unplug the router’s power cord to reset the router/modem, wait thirty seconds, plug the power cord back in. After the router turns back on, attempt to reconnect to Wi-Fi. If this does not solve the problem, contact your service provider for further assistance.
Check in Windows device manager under ‘hardware’ and then ‘network adapters’ to see if Windows indicates a problem with the Wi-Fi adapter. It may be possible for windows to automatically repair the problem or update the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter.
The Wi-Fi hardware within the laptop can be replaced by following this guide.
The AC adapter is not providing electrical input to operate the laptop or charge the battery.
Check the indicator lights on the front of the laptop. There should be two lights: a power light, and a wireless indicator light. Disregard the wireless indicator light for this troubleshooting process.
The power light should light white during normal operation using the AC adapter. If the power light is amber or flashing while using the AC adapter, there may be a problem with the AC adapter. Use a multimeter to check output of AC adapter and ensure this matches the output specifications on the label on the AC adapter. Refer to the documentation provided with the multimeter for proper use. Replace the AC adapter if necessary.
If the AC adapter light is not on at all when the AC adapter is plugged in to both the laptop and a properly functioning wall outlet, and a problem with the AC adapter has been ruled out, the power input socket on the laptop can be replaced by [invalid guide link].
The AC adapter may not be receiving power from the wall outlet. A simple way to test if the wall outlet being used is providing electricity to the AC adapter is to plug a different device, such as a lamp into the outlet. A multimeter can also be used to test the outlet, refer to documentation provided with the multimeter for proper use. If the wall outlet is not providing power, a breaker in the main breaker box in your home may need to be reset. If your AC adapter is plugged into a GFCI outlet, press the reset button on the wall outlet itself. In the case that the wall outlet still is not providing power, you may need to contact an electrician for further assistance.
Battery is not providing power to operate the laptop and a problem with electrical input from the AC adapter has been ruled out by following the AC adapter troubleshooting steps.
If the power light is flashing when the AC adapter is not plugged in, this indicates a problem with the internal power system of the laptop. Reset the laptop power system:
- Confirm that the AC adapter power input cord has been disconnected from laptopRemove battery (refer to battery replacement instructions)Press and hold down laptop power on button for a minimum of 30 seconds, releaseReinsert battery (refer to battery replacement instructions)Reconnect AC adapter then power on laptop
If electrical input problem has been ruled out and the power system reset does not resolve the issue, replace the battery of the laptop with a new battery by following this guide.
When running normal operations, the computer gets very hot to the touch or a warning of overheating is presented on the screen.
As the cooling fans run, they tend to pick up dust and can get clogged over time. It is recommended to clean out the cooling fans with a light use of compressed air duster periodically.
Cooling fans are located on either side of the laptop and have a small grille on the bottom cover for airflow. If you are not able to hear a slight sound coming from the cooling fans, you may have a faulty fan that needs to be replaced. The cooling fan can be replaced by following this guide.
Cooling fans should run fairly quiet when operating correctly. If a loud noise or whine is coming from the cooling fan, the first thing to check for is any object that might be lodged in the fan. Check the back grille and remove any foreign material. If there are no foreign materials present in the cooling fans when making loud noises, that is an indication of a cooling fan failure. The cooling fan can be replaced by following this guide.
