A caption may refer to any of the following:

  1. In general, a caption is text on an image or video describing what’s displayed. It can also show a dictation of what’s being said. For example, the picture shows a caption of electrolytic capacitors.

Another example is translated text at the bottom of a video as a person speaks a different language. This caption text is also called closed captions or closed captioning.
