A companion virus is a computer virus that stores itself in a file named similar to another program file that is commonly executed. When that file is executed, the virus infects the computer or performs malicious actions, such as deleting the files on your computer hard drive.

The first known companion virus was the Globe virus, which was first detected in 1992.
