A ping storm is that describes the act of using a ping program to send many ICMP echo request packets to a destination host. This technique may be used by a friendly party, to test the ability of the server to handle high traffic. It may also be used by a malicious third-party as an attempt to bring down a site; making it unavailable to other Internet users.
