A seed may refer to any of the following:

  1. When referring to computer programming, security, or software a random seed is a number or other value that is generated by software using one or more values. For example, hardware information, time, or date are different examples of values that help generate a random value used by a program or encryption.

  2. With BitTorrent, a seed is client on BitTorrent that is only sharing a complete file.

  3. When talking about data and machine learning, seed data is a collection of information that is used as training, testing, or as a template. For example, our computer dictionary terms could be used as seed data for anyone who needs suggestions for a list of computer terms.
