Any peripheral device that allows a desktop or laptop to connect to another device wirelessly is called a wireless adapter. The most common use of these devices is to allow a computer to connect to a router for Internet access. While the most widely used wireless adapters utilize a USB interface (as shown in the image), there are also adapters that connect via PCIe and the older PC Card socket.
