Initially developed by Aldus Corporation in 1985, Adobe PageMaker was an early GUI-based desktop publishing program. It included simple tools for laying out text and images on a page with rulers to make designs proportionate. Adobe PageMaker also supported PDF files. After its latest release in 2004, development was discontinued.
Adobe PageMaker was the predecessor to Adobe InDesign, a more advanced desktop publishing program that is included with the Adobe Creative Cloud.
