Formerly known as AirTunes, AirPlay was released by Apple in June 2004 and allows for wireless streaming of audio and other media between devices (e.g., iPods, iPads, Apple TVs, and iTunes).

The system is designed to allow media, such as music, to be sent from one device and played on another device. AirPlay also allows users to take advantage of other media devices that are available (perhaps allowing for greater volume levels or other advantages).
