An engineer is an individual who has a degree or is highly skilled in a particular field. For example, a hardware engineer is an individual who is very knowledgeable in computer hardware or designs computer hardware components. Another example, a software engineer, who is an individual skilled in computer software, testing, or writes computer software.

In some cases, a company may have different levels of engineers to help identify their skill level. For example, an individual may have the job title of a Level II hardware engineer or be a distinguished engineer.

Should the job title “engineer” be capitalized?

As a general rule, job titles are not formal titles and are not capitalized. So, unless at the beginning of a sentence, “engineer” should be lowercase and not capitalized.
