Chrome OS is a Linux-based operating system developed by Google to work exclusively with online web applications. After its initial launch on July 7, 2009, Google made the operating system an open source project under the name Chromium on November 19, 2009. The Chrome OS can only run on a computer that is designed for it and not those designed for Windows or other operating systems.

Chrome OS is installed on Google computers, like Chromebooks, and Chromeboxes. It also runs on the Acer Chromebase, and the ASUS Chromebit, which are other Chrome OS-based devices with no display or peripherals.

Updates to Chrome OS are made frequently, with new releases coming out every month or two. As of November 1, 2019, the latest Chrome OS version is 77.0.3865.105.
